Objective 3: Enact the role of service as a professionally educated
member of society.
Service is an integral part of my life. My view of life is shaped by
the fact that the God of the universe loves me and cares about me as
an individual. In order for this relationship to be possible, his son,
Jesus, came to earth as a human, lived a sinless life and then died in
my place--dying the death that I deserve because of my sin and giving
me a life with a purpose. When one receives a gift of this magnitude,
the only reasonable response is love and gratitude in return. My goal
in life is to offer back to God all that he has given to me—time,
talents and abilities, energy, hopes and desires, relationships—in
essence, everything.
I am always looking for ways to serve others in big and small ways.
People always come first in my mind over money, my own personal
time, and things that I personally want to accomplish. Charity and generosity
are priorities, no matter how much or how little that I have
to give.
Giving is a way of life. Nursing, when it is done right is
an act of charity and generosity, an act of service.
Now that I am a nurse, my avenue of service is even wider and I am
excited to use my nursing education in ways that will benefit
others here in the United States and hopefully abroad in the years to
come.

1) I had the opportunity to go to Papua New Guinea
in 2005. This is a picture of the doctor in Papua New Guinea who let
me observe and help out in the New Tribes Mission clinic for six weeks—even
though I only had my acceptance to nursing school. I hope
to continue to offer my skills as a nurse throughout the world as
the opportunity
arises.

Church where
I have devoted the majority of my volunteering
for
the past 20 years. I am currently leading
a group of senior girls with whom I have been
with since they were sophomores. I have taught
Sunday school, participated in a week long mission trip
each summer, and helped to lead the Sunday
evening youth group gathering during that
time along with many other wonderful responsibilities and
activities.

4) I have volunteered
with them for two years as an English
tutor at
their Kent, WA office to Somali Bantu
Refugees. These people are pre-literate in their first
language and so are at an
extreme disadvantage here
in America. We teach them basic reading,
writing, math, and life survival
skills.
