Objective 6: Assume responsibility and accountability for professional practice

I tend to be a lazy person and often procrastinate when deadlines loom. Nursing school has shown me that institutional deadlines are not arbitrary dates set to irritate and inconvenience the participants. I was insensitive to the overall needs of the program when I started. As time progressed, I began to understand the intricacies and complexities behind deadlines and I am now much improved at meeting them.

I also tend to scoff at certifications, knowing that the paper is not a very good representation of what I know or have accomplished. However, I understand that those pieces of paper hold the key that will get me where I want to be so I will continue to seek certification and continuing education.

I thought long and hard before I joined Sigma Theta Tau International, Honor Society of Nursing. I am not a person who longs for recognition or needs a long list of accomplishments. However, I think that having the opportunity to rub elbows with the best of the best in nursing will benefit me in the long run. I also like the idea of having access to their library. I don’t feel like I have much time for additional commitments but I am willing to give it a try.

I do not want to be a union member. I feel that unions have served their purpose and are now a detriment to the nursing profession. I will find a position that does not require union membership.

I have found that a large part of professionalism is remaining true to one’s values. It is all too easy to become caught up in chasing after a dream that is not worth pursuing or is not in line with what I hold to be true and valuable. I will carefully pick and choose from the opportunities that come my way to ensure that I am not sidetracked by fluff or misled by someone else’s desires.

1) Group Contract Reflection: My reflection on the workings of our N220 group, the PF Flyers. This shows personal reflection and a willingness to change my attitude when necessary. A large part of professional behavior is getting along with others.

2) Documentation of BLS for Healthcare Providers, ACLS and HIV Training: Up-to-date certification and training shows accountability and responsibility regarding basic requirements for a Med/Surg nurse.

3) ATI Test Results: I have included these here to show that I am going to use them as a starting point for studying for the NCLEX. I scored fairly well in most of the tests but I will carefully review the itemized results (not shown here) to help guide my study for the test. I am actively taking steps to obtain my license!

4) Pain Management Workshop: This certificate shows that I completed this training. I have included it here because a large portion of our class agreed to participate in a research study conducted by Dr Ruth Schaffler but few actually honored that commitment. Veracity is an ethical principle that is a large part of responsibility and accountability. One’s word must be trustworthy.

5) Virginia Mason Internship: I was accepted into the Virginia Mason Medical Center Nurse Tech II program for the summer between my Jr. and Sr. years of Nursing School. It is designed specifically for nursing students in a BSN program and it included nursing students from across the country. I participated in over 300 hours of clinical experience with a preceptor on the Pulmonary/Thorasic surgery floor. This opportunity to complimented the education I was receiving at PLU and gave me an opportunity to expand my horizons away from PLU.
